Artist books combine text, imagery, and sculpture; transforming an intangible idea into physical form. This workshop will lead you from simple folded and sewn pages to both multi-section books and more complex experimental structures. You will gain a solid foundation in traditional bookbinding using only hand tools.
Each day you will explore one traditional and one modern book structure, emphasizing both craft and content. The final day will be reserved for refining technique and using your range of book models as a springboard to create a new, innovative structure. During this information-packed workshop, you will build the knowledge, skills, and inspiration to continue making books in your own studio.
Karen Hanmer's handmade books are physical manifestations of personal essays intertwining history, culture, politics, science, and technology. She utilizes both traditional and contemporary book structures, and her work is often playful in content or format. Hanmer's work is included in collections ranging from Tate Britain and the Library of Congress to Yale University and Graceland. She has served on the Editorial Board of The Bonefolder, as Exhibitions Chair for the Guild of Book Workers, and as a frequent exhibition curator and juror. Karen leads a variety of workshops and classes in bookbinding foundations.
